About me
Jerry is a full professor, past department chair, former Graduate School associate dean, and the founding counseling doctoral program director at UT San Antonio (formally named The University of Texas at San Antonio). He began his first independent private counseling practice in the mid-1980's and provided clinical mental health, addictions, and family counseling, as well as clinical supervision in multiple clinical settings including independent practices, community mental health agencies, and corrections. He started academe as a counselor educator and nontenured faculty member at Western Michigan University in the late 1980's. Jerry began his first tenure track faculty position at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1992. There he served as a counseling department faculty member (assistant, associate, and full) and the clinical director of the Nicholas A. Vacc Counseling Center. He is an American Counseling Association (ACA) Fellow, former division president of both the AARC and the International Association of Addictions and Offender (IAAOC), former editor-in-chief of the Journal of Addictions & Offender Counseling, former associate editor of the Journal of Counseling & Development, former chair of ACA's Council of Journal Editors, and former Fellow of the North Carolina Governor's Institute on Alcohol and Substance Abuse. Jerry is a Licensed Professional Counselor in the State of Texas. He is board certified in general counseling, addictions counseling, and clinical supervision. He has authored 16 professional counseling textbooks and is currently finishing the third edition of his 17th book, Counseling Addicted Families: A Sequential Assessment and Treatment Model (Routledge) with Drs. Bryce Hagedorn (UCF) and Daniel Gutierrez (VCU). Jerry's books include topics such as: suicide, addictions, assessment, family counseling, and bullying and school violence. He has authored or co-authored more than 70 refereed journal articles, 19 assessment instruments (including co-authoring The Life Balance Inventory with his longtime professional colleague and personal close friend, Dr. Rick Balkin; the Adapted-SAD PERSONS Suicide Assessment Scale; the Juhnke, Henderson, & Juhnke Child Abuse and Neglect Risk Assessment Scale; the Human Sexual Trafficking Quick Assessment Scale, etc.). He has presented over 100 professional conference presentations. Jerry is a skilled clinical counselor and supervisor, a master presenter, and a counseling expert in suicide, addictions, and family counseling. Family and friends claim Jerry is a superb chef who creates savory entrees and desserts powerful enough to derail even the strictest diet intentions. He's also a seasoned "blue water" sailor, a "rusty" jazz musician who still believes wrong notes are simply creative improvisation, and an avid college sports fan whose emotional well-being occasionally depends upon decisions made by people wearing striped shirts. When Jerry is not teaching or authoring counseling textbooks, he enjoys writing novels, painting Lake Michigan nautical scenes and sailboats in oils, or sailing the Lake Michigan shoreline from Chicago through the Straits to Mackinac Island and points beyond. His life is blessed by the love of his life, Debbie. The two have been married 43 years and enjoy walking the
San Antonio Riverwalk and Gulf Coast beaches whenever possible--although cool Lake Michigan shorelines in Northern Michigan and Michigan's Upper Peninsula are their favorites.
